The FISH4ACP program identified a critical social issue in Lake Tanganyika fishing communities: the practice of "Pela Ukupela" (Fish for Sex), which has profound negative impacts on health, livelihoods, and social dynamics. This harmful practice was leading to increased illness, child marriages, and exploitation within fishing communities.
Leading the communications and behavioral change component through Bridgecom Narratives, we employed a scientific framework addressing the intention-action gap. Our approach included: Choice Architecture creating clear "two paths" narratives, Social Norms Strategy leveraging community leaders and peer educators, and Evidence-Based Design with continuous monitoring and documentation for replicable methodology.
